Purpose:

To assist and guide the professional development and success of faculty hired into the clinician educator track in the areas of teaching, service, and professional productivity.  Most of the emphasis in years 1-3 should be on reaching the objectives of professional productivity by assisting the mentee in developing an area or areas of professional productivity that utilizes their academic efforts and strengths. In years 3-5, the focus should be on expanding their professional productivity and ensuring the mentee is meeting the expectations of teaching and service. These general guidelines will be individualized to meet the mentee’s needs and goals.

The mentoring committee does not replace, but rather augments, the standard mentoring that occurs between a division director and the faculty, or other relationships set up formally or informally to help insure the success of the faculty.  The purpose of the mentoring committee is to provide a broader base of individuals looking out for the faculty’s best interests and success.

The mentoring committee report will not be shared with the promotion or reappointment committees and is meant to aid the faculty in career development.

Mentor-Mentee meetings:

The meetings will be conducted at least annually with a formal report generated at the spring meeting each year. Divisional support staff will be responsible for scheduling the meeting. .  At the initial meeting, the mentee will describe his/her area(s) of professional productivity, outline goals, and discuss plans for reaching those goals. More informal meetings may occur throughout the year at the request of the mentee or mentors. (By year 4 and certainly by year 5, the mentee will give a seminar to the Committee or, if appropriate, their Division or the Department, clearly demonstrating that their area(s) of professional productivity has had an impact, i.e., by improving a clinical service, an educational venue, administration, or dissemination of knowledge (scholarship).) After an individual attains the rank of associate professor, formal mentoring meetings can be continued if requested by the mentee.

Deliverables:

The mentoring committee chair will be responsible for providing a report on the mentees progress for the year and future goals.. The report should include current responsibilities/projects in the areas of teaching, service, and professional productivity. A paragraph addressing goals and future projects as well as progress towards these goals should also be included. Mentees should make known to their mentors areas of concern including barriers to accomplishment of goals, and possible remedies so this can be included in the report. An assessment of the mentees progress toward reappointment and/or promotion should be included.

The report is to be submitted to Amy McDonald no later than two weeks after the meeting.  A copy of the report will be sent to the Mentee, Division Director, Vice Chair for Faculty Advancement, Clinical Programs and Education, as well as the Department Chair.  The mentee will have the opportunity to comment on the report if they wish to do so.  The Department Chair and Vice Chairs will meet with the Mentee if necessary to assist implementation of committee suggestions.  Please note that the mentoring committee report will not be shared with the promotion or reappointment committees unless the mentee is asked and approves for the committees to view.

[SJF1]I am not sure that we need the section in parentheses, I think this makes the mentoring committee evaluative and that is not what we want, these directions should be coming from the DD.  The mentoring committee should be encouraging presentations/scholarly work.

[SJF2]Do we want to have the mentors formally assessing readiness for promotion?  Not sure would maybe soften this a little

[SJF3]Do we want to include the assessment on promotion
